MATCH Animation Intensifier opens in Ōtaki

After nearly two years of planning and development, the first MATCH Intensifier programme has opened at the Māoriland Hub. Over the next six weeks, nine rangatahi will undertake a rapid animation training programme that will see them enter careers in the creative technology sector.

For 19-year-old Isabella Fetineiai, “It’s taking a passion and a hobby and connecting me to people from the industry who I can learn from even more. My self-motivation has increased because I’m connected with those who can help turn my dream in a full-on professional.”

Led by Jared Tuoro and Rautini Thompson, the MATCH animation intensifier will feature masterclasses with industry professionals, a field-trip to Aotearoa’s top digital producing studios including Weta Digital alongside cultural, social and vocational mentorship. This training will see the participants achieve an industry-recognised MATCH micro-credential and 12 weeks of on-job training to kick start their working life. It is one of four intensifier programmes to take place at the Māoriland Hub over the next year.

The MATCH Intensifier programme was developed by Libby Hakaraia and Madeleine de Young and is supported by the Vodafone Foundation and the Ministry of Social Development. It is complemented by a Kura Takawaenga and Wharekura programme creating a pathway for rangatahi in Ōtaki and the Kāpiti Coast into the creative tech sector.

Creative Technology is one of the fastest-growing industries in the world and holds great potential for rangatahi Māori with new jobs created every day. This is work that can be done from anywhere in the world. MATCH is a tangible way for rangatahi to seize this opportunity.
