  • Director Bio "BRIAR GRACE-SMITH Briar Grace-Smith is of Ng?puhi descent and an award winning writer of plays, short stories and screenplays. She attended the Sundance writers lab with the feature film The Strength of Water, which premiered at the Berlin Film Festival. Her work as a director includes the short films Nine of Hearts, Charm – one of the eight short films that make up the acclaimed feature film Waru - and Krystal which is currently screening as part of the NZIFF NZ Best Shorts 2019. In 2018 she received the Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to theatre, film and television. Briar has recently finished the screen adaptation of the novel, Cousins, by Patricia Grace, which she will Co-Direct with Ainsley Gardiner. In 2019 Briar and Ainsley were awarded the Sundance Institute Merata Mita Fellowship which recognizes their inspiring works."
