Panay worked in the city as a journalist. One day, she found her tribe had been overdeveloped and changed by tourism. They were losing their land and their culture, so she decided to return home to bring back the abandoned terrace. In this process, she found it’s not only about the land, but also about who she really is.

  • Indigenous Key Creative Bio Lekal Sumi, born in 1985, with father from Tainan and mother from the Amis, grew up in Tainan. After the military, he came back to Makudaai Tribe of Hualian and started to contact Ami origins and culture. Since he barely grew up in the tribe and was quite strange to the culture, he decided to stay in the tribe to find out the part he had forgotten. In 2011, due to his mother’s idea of rehabilitating terraces that had wasted 20 years, Lekal picked up the camera for the first time to record the whole process. At first he had no concept on image recording and production but he finished his first personal documentary “Wish of the Ocean Rice” after two years’ photographing. Thanks to the work, he opened the door to image creation.
