Founded to support the descendants of Ngāti Raukawa, Te Ātiawa, and Ngāti Toarangatira, Toi Matarau extends its welcoming embrace to artists from Aotearoa, the Pacific, and Turtle Island.
In ‘Toi Matarau ki Kapiti,’ a tapestry of sovereign storytellers manifests their creative dreams in unique and extraordinary ways, reflecting their deep connections to Home and Land on the Kapiti Coast and beyond.
This year, Toi Matarau spotlights new artists, joining the ranks of esteemed Indigenous creators such as Sonia Snowden and Darcy Nicholas. Within this diverse Indigenous artspace, long-standing resident artists like Michel Tuffery, Maria Brockhill, and Jane Hakaraia share their brilliance. The gallery also proudly features the works of international Indigenous artists from Turtle Island, including Noel Herkes Tekai, Carly Treece, Venaya Begaye, Karen Aguilar and others.
Visitors to Toi Matarau can anticipate encountering a rich array of artistic expressions, from Uku (clay) and Raranga (weaving) to Pounamu, Whakairo (carving and sculptures, including light sculptures), Waituhi (paintings, prints, fine art, and digital prints), and textiles.
