NGĀ KŌTIRO O TARANAKI
The Land Wars in Aotearoa are “over”. A Taranaki hapū is planning a feast with Pākehā to mark the start of more peaceful times. But all is not what it seems.
Ngā Kōtiro o Taranaki is a stunningly colourful, 2D animated short series set in 1870’s Taranaki, Aotearoa. It is told from the perspective of a fictionalised version of the day where three young girls survived the bloodless massacre of their hapū.
Ngā Kōtiro o Taranaki begins with the three main characters, Waikirenga, Mihi, and Ngāru living in the smouldering aftermath of the land wars.
It is based upon and inspired by pūrākau told by generations of the whānau of writer and lead animator Rautini. Pūrākau passed down to her from her Great-Great-Great-Great Grandmother.
The narrative arc of the series centres on a particular incident not found in the history books in schools but is held true within Rautini’s whānau, and certainly shared across whānau all over Aotearoa.
This pūrākau whānau provides an opportunity to re-consider the effects of colonisation in Aotearoa.

Written by Rautini and animated by her and her close friends this is the first animated series by a group of young people working entirely out of Ōtaki and the Māoriland Tech Creative Hub (M.A.T.C.H). M.A.T.C.H Animation Intensifier programme created by Māoriland Charitable Trust. The programme is designed to identify and nurture the talents of rangatahi by inspiring them with incredible facilitators from within the creative tech industry as well as giving them access to the tools they need.
With a Bachelor’s Degree in Animation specialising in Character and Story Development, Rautini shared her art and creative talents with other rangatahi. She pitched Ngā Kōtiro o Taranaki to Libby Hakaraia and this was the beginning of this series.
Rautini worked closely with Producer and Māoriland Tumu Whakarae Libby Hakaraia and Tainui Stephens to create the application for Whakaata Māori and then successfully secured funding from Te Mangai Pāho.
