The Ani Waaka Room. Toi te kudu, Toi te mana at māoriland hub, 6.30pm, Friday second, December. Toi matarau in collaboration with te tākupu, te wananga o raukawa presents, Toi te kupu, toi te mana, poetry readings by Debbie brought on and creatives of ōtaki. Celebrating the recent launch of debbie’s first poetry collection ‘the ani waaka room’, published by tākupu, te wananga o raukawa. From Taranaki poet Debbie Broughton, ‘The ani waaka room’ is a collection of poems that celebrate the survival of Taranaki ancestors who were forced by was to leave their homelands for aro pā. The poems weave together ancestor and descendent, Taranaki and te aro, family stories and government atrocities. ‘The ani waaka room’ is a challenge to those who ignore mana whenua in cities, and rongoā for those who know papatūanuku breathes layers of concrete.
