The Māoriland Hub Presents
SUFFRAGE 2043
2018 marks the 125th anniversary of women’s suffrage in New Zealand. 125 years ago Māori women were amongst those who signed the suffrage petition that led to women gain the right to vote in Aotearoa.
Amongst the signatories was a Mary Bevan. This was Mereruiha Hakaraia of Ōtaki.
This tūpuna kuia was one of several Māori women who signed the Suffrage Petition in 1893.
Honouring the vision and strength of these Wahine Toa we are inviting their descendants to create an artwork and record their dreams and hopes for their uri in 2043.
If you are an uri of Mereruiha Hakaraia or any of the Māori Suffrage signatories
We invite you to be part of Suffrage2043.
- To whakamana our tūpuna kuia
- To create an artwork that includes your whakaaro for 2043
- To record your whakaaro for a Māoriland documentary film to be included alongside the artwork.
