Be part of the reo Māori adaptation of Spirited Away
Māoriland Films is casting the te reo Māori version of Studio Ghibli’s beloved animated classic, Spirited Away, directed by Hayao Miyazaki.
We are looking for fluent speakers of te reo Māori with strong performance and voice acting skills to bring Chihiro, Haku, Yubaba and the unforgettable characters of Spirited Away to life in te reo Māori.
For generations, audiences around the world have grown up with Spirited Away. Now, for the first time, this iconic story will be heard in te reo Māori.
The film will premiere across Whakaata Māori and MĀORI+ – New Zealand’s national Indigenous broadcaster and streaming platform for catch-up – in December 2026, which marks the 25th anniversary of the first release, before screening at the Māoriland Film Festival in March 2027.

KEY ROLES
- CHIHIRO – A timid ten-year-old who discovers her hidden courage when her family’s survival is on the line
- YUBABA – A greedy, iron-willed witch who rules the bathhouse through fear &
- ZENIBA – Yubaba’s twin: fearsome in reputation, but warm and a kuia in reality
(Casting Note: Yubaba and Zeniba to be performed by the same voice actor)
- LIN – A sharp-tongued bathhouse worker with a tough exterior and a loyal heart
- HAKU – A calm, mysterious boy concealing an ancient and turbulent past
- KAMAJI – A cantankerous boiler-room keeper with an unexpected streak of tenderness

HOW TO APPLY
You’ll need to start the form to access the audition materials, including the guide videos and scripts. Watch the guide video, prepare your recording, then submit your audition link through the form.
You must be 12 years or older to audition. If you are under 16, you must have permission from a parent or guardian to apply.
Applications will be considered as they are received until roles are filled.
